The 16th ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (16th ADMM) and related meetings hosted by Cambodia kicked off on Wednesday.

Myanmar’s Defence Minister General Mya Tun Oo also attended the meeting.

The meeting is being held at the Ministry of Defence while the ASEAN Defense Ministers are discussing a report on recent developments in ASEAN and a summary report on the outcome of the recent ASEAN Defence Senior Officials Meeting (ADSOM) as well as adopting new initiatives and joint declarations of the Defense Ministers’ Meeting.

In his opening speech, Defence Minister General Tea Banh welcomed all the heads of the delegates who support Cambodia as the chair of the meeting.

The discussed documents include enhanced military cooperation among Asean member states to prevent cross-border pandemics, promote support mechanisms for Asean female peacekeepers, and strengthen cooperation among Asean military educational institutions.

The meeting will also consider India’s request for an ASEAN-India maritime naval exercise and decide on the holding of an informal meeting between the ASEAN Defense Ministers and a number of countries in November this year.

Cambodia is committed to promoting ASEAN solidarity, jointly addressing current regional security challenges and emerging challenges under the theme “Solidarity for Harmonised Security”.

The Heads of Delegates of ASEAN Member States and the Secretary-General of ASEAN will also pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The ASEAN-China Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting and the ASEAN-Japan Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting will be held on the sidelines of the ADMM this afternoon.
